According to Jewish law you are a Jew if you have a Jewish mother. It is a matter of biology. When Jesus says, “whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother,” he lets us know that his followers will not be determined by race or ethnicity but on faith. That tells us that while we can decry the loss of the faith in traditionally Catholic countries such as Ireland or Puerto Rico this provides a gospel opportunity. Instead of relying on the culture to convey the faith to an individual our contemporary situation requires that we plant the seeds of belief in each person one at a time. A personal response of belief is what is now required.
