St. Matthew’s Gospel has five long sermons — the best known being the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7. Matthew 13 is sometimes referred to as the Sermon in Parables. Parables were, of course, Jesus preferred manner of teaching. He most often did not present doctrine or catechism but stories. The meaning of these stories is up to us to complete. For example, Jesus says Let the weeds and wheat grow together until harvest. Preachers tend to interpret this as a explanation of the presence of good and bad people in the world. What if we make it more personal — that within our hearts we can find weeds and wheat, the bad and the good. We must learn to prevent the “weeds” from inhibiting our growth in goodness.
