Today is the actual Feast of St. James so these readings are a repeat of the ones we used when we celebrated our patron on Sunday. The great thing about the Bible is that there is always more, that no matter how often you read a particular text something else bites you the next time you read it. What stood out this morning was the words of Jesus: “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve.” Those of us of a certain age will remember President Kennedy saying, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Can you imagine a politician saying that nowadays! In our consumerist society it’s all about what I can get. That has even infected religious practice. Often people say they’ve stopped going to Church because “I don’t get anything out of it.” So we as Church sometimes become entertainers to be attractive. Maybe, instead, we should echo challenge of Jesus: are you serving, are you giving of yourself, are you forgiving, are you generous? That’s when you’ll get something out of it.
