Moses chided Aaron for participating in the creation of the Golden Calf. Aaron responded: “The people gave gold jewelry to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.” It reminds me of politicians who, confronted with some egregious activity, respond “Mistakes were made.” What Aaron and politicians — and all of us — have to understand is that genuine repentance, which leads to genuine conversion, only happens when we accept responsibility for our actions. We as a nation are wrestling with how to deal with our history — the good, the bad and the ugly. As Catholic we know that confessing our sins is a necessary for forgiveness and also provides the opportunity for a “firm purpose of amendment” not to sin again.
