The LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as one man speaks to another. At times, I wish my prayer was like that — but it’s not. Often I have difficulty hearing what the Lord is saying to me. On a retreat a few years ago, Tony DeMello, SJ, called that encountering the “blank.” Prayer does not always feel like a dialogue but one-sided. Tony suggested that our problem is that we conduct our prayer in conceptual language. Prayer is most effective when it is of the heart, not words. Think of an old married couple who no longer need words to communicate but are connected with their spouse on a more intimate level. Prayer beyond words forms the deepest connection with God.
