Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables. By speaking in parables to reveal something of God, using the common everyday experiences that everyone would recognized, Jesus let us know that God is not out there but in here, with us. Jesus did not invent the parable form. Look at Jeremiah today who used underwear to illustrate something of God! Who would have thought of that. And in the images Jesus used of the mustard seed and the woman mixing yeast in flour we learn another thing about God — that size doesn’t matter (no matter what Godzilla thinks.) God uses even the smallest, even the least, to bring about something good. When we look at the enormity of problems today we can get discouraged. Jesus says do your little bit, plant your mustard seed of kindness, forgiveness, generosity, compassion and see how God multiplies it to fill the kingdom of God.
