Let my eyes stream with tears day and night, without rest, Over the great destruction which overwhelms the virgin daughter of my people, over her incurable wound. The Jewish nation had the misfortune of being between the two superpowers of its day — Babylon and Egypt. It was constantly caught in the cross-fire and by the prophet Jeremiah’s time was slowly being chewed up. This would eventually led to the complete destruction of the nation and exile. The Prophet seeks what God is doing in the midst of the disaster. He urges the people to trust that God continues to be at work even in the chaos. We know in hindsight that his message eventually enabled the Chosen People to become a “people of the book.”
