The feast we celebrate today used to be dedicated only to St. Martha. Pope Francis added her siblings, Mary and Lazarus so now we remember all three of them on the same day. This might be a good day to thank God for our brothers and sisters. More importantly, as the gospels relate, the three of them were friends of Jesus. Even the Son of God needs friends! So let’s thank God for friends as well. Martha’s grief at the death of Lazarus is one of the most dramatic in the Bible. Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.”Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life.”
