JULY292026

July 29, 2026 By Church Staff

I read the modern equivalent of Dear Abby (I can’t remember what the current iteration is called) every day. It is moral theology at its most basic. My guess is that about 90% of the advice sought has to do with problematic family interactions. Certainly the Bible has many examples of families that have a hard time getting along — all the way back to Cain and Abel! How delightful, then, that in the gospels we get to meet a family which loves and supports each other. Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died]. These siblings, who were friends of Jesus, had all of the differences that personality involves — Martha the doer, Mary the thinker. But the bottom line was that they were there for each other. In our prayer today we might particularly lift up our family members who have our backs in thick and in thicker.
