A current phenomenon in American politics is the call in certain quarters for “Christian nationalism.” While not exactly sure what that means I am sure that it is not a Biblical idea. The image of imposing Christianity by force (which, by the way, has been tried and failed in history) runs counter to the gospel. Certainly speaking the truth to power is part of the prophetic vocation we share at baptism but it is only effective with personal witness, not greater force. Think of Jeremiah facing opposition: “It was the LORD who sent me to you, to speak all these things for you to hear.” Think of John the Baptist denouncing the marriage of Herod. They were seeking to change hearts and minds, not structures.
