Who wouldn’t want to find a treasure buried in a field? Who wouldn’t like to possess a pearl of great price? Jesus challenges us in these parables to look for what is truly valuable. When you talk with young people their goals seem admirable — to have a fulfiiling job, to raise a good family, to be a responsible citizen. But Jesus dares us to look beyond the merely admirable to find that there is something more that our hearts are made for. “I will survive” has become an anthem of our age but is survival enough? Jesus says we are made for a life of love, a life of joy, a life of fullness. That life happens when we look beyond the way the world measures success or happiness and strive to share in the life that God wishes for us. God’s treasure comes to us once we accept the unconditional love that God showers on us and when we resolve to share that love with the ever widening circle of people who are woven into our lives.
