Jehoiakim was like politicians we see nowadays. As the kingdom of Judah diminished he kept switching sides between Egypt and Babylond depending on who would keep him in power. In the end it did him no good and he died in disgrace. Jesus on the other hand was a man of integrity. No matter what people thought about him or said about him (“Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds?“) he stayed true to his identity as the one who lived always and only for God. People “took offense” at Jesus because he challenged them to be more than what they were. He was just like they were — a poor working man from a poor working family — yet he was focused on God. Most people, then and now, are happy to have God as part of their life but Jesus dares us to see everything, every decision that we make, in the light of God’s mercy and love.
