“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” There is an expression in English, “Seeing is believing.” You might get the impression from the words of Jesus that T homas came to belief through sight. Actually, the text suggests otherwise. What Thomas saw was a wounded, executed criminal. What he believed was that he was witnessing, “My Lord and my God.” Think how that works in our own lives. All too often what we see in front of us is a mess — someone who is wounded, yes, but who inflicts wounds on others. How easy it is to look down upon such people and to avoid them. What we have to believe is that even people who are a mess are children of God, made in God’s image and precious in God’s sight. It is an act of faith at time to recognize God in others when we see how ugly people can be but that is what Jesus expects of us.
