There might be a special providence that on the day when we as a nation celebrate our independence, the daily reading is taken from the prophet Hosea. Hosea spoke to his country of the need to reform. They were acting in ways contrary to God — oppressing the poor, warring with other nations, acting without justice. The way to correct these abuses, Hosea preaches, is for Israel to go back to its roots. Thus says the LORD: I will allure her; I will lead her into the desert, and speak to her heart. In the suffering of the desert, Israel had learned to follow God. Perhaps we should look at our roots to reform the nation, remembering a heritage of “liberty and justice for all.”
