Jesus pitied the crowd because they “were troubled and abandoned.” Things don’t change all that much. This election cycle seems to be driven by crowds that feel troubled and abandoned. There is a difference though between then and now. Modern politicians blame the problem as lying with someone else. The reason you feel the way you do is because of the immigrants, or because of the Muslims, or because of the one-percent. Jesus is heir to a prophetic tradition which sees the problem in personal terms. The beginnings of a cure for what ails society occurs when I change into a more kind, compassionate, forgiving and generous person. Things improve when we acknowledge that we are all sheep of one flock, the people of God.
