In the book of Genesis, Ishmael is the oldest son of Abraham, father of the faithful. Hagar is one of our mothers in faith. The Bible treats them with great reverence and their story ends with the promise of God that they are the ancestors of a “great nation.” In the Quran, Ishmael is considered the progenitor of the Arab peoples and the prophet Mohammed is one of his descendants. For four thousand years memory of these ancient people have motivated and inspired believers. We might not have memories that long but we have the faith because of those who have gone before us. For a profitable reflection, spend some time recalling the examples of faith that brought you to your encounter with God.
