We are an “apostolic church” because only the testimony of the apostles tells us about Jesus. He left no record except in the hearts of his followers. When the evangelists mention the naming of the “twelve apostles” we sit up and take notice. What I find most interesting is that we know so little about the twelve. We know that St. Peter went to Rome and is buried there — for the others, there are only rumors and legends. That says to me that the apostles are absolutely essential for the faith… but really not that important. It was essential that they share the message they received but whatever character they had as individuals was not that important. That says something about our call to be apostles as well.
