At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned. While there are situations where my heart is moved with pity — refugee children separated from their parents, dying patients isolated from loved ones, people who are denied opportunity because of their race or national origin — other times I feel anger. It might be true that those who perpetrate gun violence are “trouble and abandoned” but I feel no pity for them when they harm children. Pity or no, Jesus said the solution is prayer for more “laborers for the harvest.” As a church and as a society we need more people who are working to bring peace and justice into families and onto the streets.
