At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them. Since Jesus was full of comassion when he saw suffering his heart was moved with pity. But Jesus lived before modern communication. He only saw the suffering right in front of him. We see the suffering in Ukraine, in Haiti, in Venezuela, in Somalia, in (fill in the blank, the list is long.) We see suffering in the violence in our cities in an environment raped by greed, in income inequality, in racism, in (fill in the blank, the list is long.) Seeing so much can cause an overload — we can’t feel pity for all of these situations so we can shut down. The challenge for us as followers of Jesus is to do what we can. We can’t possibly address all of the problems we are seeing so we should pick the one or two that are close to our heart and let our pity for that situation spur us into action.
