The call of the prophet Isaiah is one of the iconic moments in the Bible. “Here I am, send me,” said the prophet in response to God’s call for volunteers. We all strive for the freedom to be able to respond to God’s call to us. Look at all that led up to that moment for Isaiah. He had an experience of God’s glory. That experience produced in him a sense of his own inadequacy, his own sinfulness. He cried out in prayer confessing his need. Then he felt the merciful forgiveness of God cleansing him. Only then could he fulfill God’s plan for his life. We need replicate Isaiah’s journey — a sense of God’s presence, an awareness of human frailty, a prayer of need, an acceptance of mercy — on our own way to following God’s plan for us.
