The prophet Isaiah is so important both in Jewish and Christian thinking that he is frequently referred to as the capital “P” Prophet. The account of his call to become a prophet reminds us that no one chooses to a prophetic vocation but that God chooses them. Isaiah’s call came from two sources: first, his profound sense of the glory and majesty of God. Second, his awareness of personal and communal unworthiness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips.” God called Isaiah precisely to bring the holiness of God to a desperate people. Isaiah’s call embodies the truth of an old spiritual: “He looked beyond my fault and saw my need.”
