The prophet Hosea ministered in the Kingdom of Israel in the eighth century B.C. He criticized his society because it had kept the poor oppressed, created unjust structures, neglected those who were suffering, ignored the commands of God. The prophet warned: When they sow the wind, they shall reap the whirlwind. To put it more prosaically, actions have consequences. A society built on selfishness and greed is unsustainable. It is easy to see parallels to the prophetic message today. We have “sown the wind” of absolute individualism. As a result, the bonds of family, community, neighborhood, Church, nation have been weakened. We are “reaping the whirlwind” of a society which has become divided into almost intractable tribes. It is incumbent on us as Christians to work to re-establish those human connections which reflect the fact that we are all children of God and must togther care for our common home.
