Psalm 27 has as its refrain: I long to see your face, O Lord. We as believers can all take that as our mantra. The temptation, though, is to imagine that seeing the face of God will be dramatic, unusual, spectacular. That seems to be what Elijah expected but he could not find God in the hurricane, the earthquake or the volcano. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak. Not the extraordinary but something as ordinary as a summer breeze revealed God’s presence. Although she was a great mystic, St. Teresa of Avila taught her sisters to look for God in the pots and pans. We will find God hidden in the ordinary.
