The Bible says that Barnabas was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. We also read in the Acts of the Apostles the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul.” Yet despite this divine commission we read a little farther on that Paul and Barnabas couldn’t get along, had a falling out, went their separate ways. I find this tremendously consoling. If two great saints found it difficult to sing Kum-Ba-Ya together we should not be surprised that us lesser mortals have our differences and disagreements as well. The lesson: realize that God works with our individual personalities which at times don’t mesh with others but we all need to use our unique gifts to bring about good news.
