The Church in Jerusalem sent Barnabas to go to Antioch … for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. The “Church in Jerusalem” were local yokels. Barnabas was more cosmopolitan so he seemed better equipped to evaluate how things were going outside of the closed Jewish society they knew. In addition, he had the personality for it. He was a “son of encouragement,” someone who could see the good in others and invite them to give their gifts. He is, perhaps, best remembered for rehabilitating Paul’s reputation among the Jesus movement, convincing the Church that he had changed from persecutor to believer. After working together for time they went in separate ways and Barnabas moved on to encourage others!
