The Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” It must have been consoling for Barnabas and Saul (St. Paul) to be given a direct commission by the Holy Spirit. They set out together in what is known as the first missionary journey. But it did not end well, probably to everyone’s surprise. The two apostles went their separate ways on subsequent missionary journeys. What a great reminder that human nature factors into even divine plans. Once I assigned two great missionaries to work in a specific area. It was a painful experience for all involved despite the good will on everyone’s part. You know the saying: you can’t have two roosters in the hen house. We learn that often accomplishing God’s plan is a matter of giftedness. God will use us with our talents and our deficiencies for some good end. There is not one way of being an apostle. Everyone must apply their uniqueness in spreading good news.
