Today the Church celebrates a new feast: Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. The interesting lesson chosen for the date is from the story of the temptation of Adam and Even in Genesis. God asked the woman, “Why did you do such a thing?” The woman answered, “The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it.” Eve, the mother of all the living, deflects responsibility for her actions. Mary, the mother of the Church, assumes responsibility for the plan that God had for her life. “Let it be done to me according to your word.” In this time when our country is convulsed from violence we must acknowledged our personal responsibility to confront racism and work to find a way toward healing.
