“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.” Notice that Jesus does not say that from now on everything will be hunky dory. He says that by following him we are taking on a yoke, a weight to steer us through life. What he is, in fact, doing is offering us a trade. Give up your yoke — where you have to make your own way and stay in control at all times. Take on my yoke –trust that the love of God provides us that no matter how things seem to be going, God is still at work. What we learn from Jesus is that Good Friday is part of the story, that suffering and tragedy are part of the human story. But the yoke of Jesus is easy and light because we don’t need to steer the ship since we trust that the God who has brought us this far by faith is not about to leave us now. This is a two oxen yoke — Jesus and I are pulling together.
