“Turning the other cheek” is one of those commands of Jesus that challenge us (me!). When someone hurts us or disrespects us, our (my!) tendency is to lash out. The reality is that the opportunities to turn the other cheek are more occasional than frequent. More challenging, because more frequent, is the word of Jesus: “Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.” Sitting in the food pantry every day how do I respond if someone says they need bus fare? If I give it to them, all one hundred people in line will say they need bus fare. Judging who truly is in need and who is grasping is a constant challenge.
