During the Sermon on the Mount in St. Matthew Jesus teaches us what we call today “the Lord’s Prayer.” There is another version of the prayer in St. Luke which is slightly shorter. We can never know the original form but the differences are instructive. For example, in Luke the invocation is simply “Father” whereas in Matthew we read “Our Father.” The “our” was very important in Matthew for he lived in a community which was splitting apart on racial lines — Jew and Gentile. The “our” spoke of the necessary underlying unity. Since we continue to say “Our Father” in our version of the prayer we are including Black Lives Matter, Justice of Immigrants, Equality for women as part of our relationship with God.
