The gospels were written down years after the death of Jesus. The first followers carried the memory of his words and deeds orally for generations before they were recorded in pen and ink. And, the gospels were written in Greek while Jesus was a Aramaic speaker. All of which helps explain the variations we find in the gospel accounts. St. Matthew has Jesus say: “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” St. Luke: “Be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate.” We have no way of getting back to exactly what Jesus said but the point is clear. We are made for more. We are capable of loving our enemies. With God’s grace we can reflect God’s gifts to us with others.
