Since the Ascension the Gospel readings have been stressing the presence of the Holy Spirit. This helps us to prepare ourselves for the great feast of Pentecost. However, today instead of a reading about the Holy Spirit the Gospel of St. John reports the post-resurrection scene of the encounter of Jesus and St. Peter. Why? Perhaps when the lectionary was put together they wanted to illustrate what it is like to possess the Spirit. As Spirit-filled people we do love Jesus; we do feed and tend the sheep; we do follow where Jesus leads. But how fascinating that St. John includes another aspect of being Spirit-filled. “When you grow old someone will lead you where you do not want to go.” Yes, even that!
