The “wearin’ of the green” which we say on St. Patrick’s Day is actually more appropriate for the season of ordinary time. From now until the end of November the color of the season is green, celebrating the gift of life we receive from God. During ordinary time the epistle and gospel are a lectio continuo, reading a particular book of the Bible chapter by chapter. This Sunday the epistle is taken from Paul’s letter to the Romans and the Gospel, in Year A, from St. Matthew. Chapter ten of the gospel is the second of the five sermons Jesus preaches, usually referred to at the “missionary discourse.” In the sermon Jesus instructs his followers how to bring good news into the world. His basic message: do not be afraid.
