If I ever write a book it will be entitled The Commandments of Jesus (as distinct from the Ten Commandments.) The first of these commandments would be “Thou shalt not worry” (Matthew 6:25). In our culture if you are not worrying people suspect you are irresponsible. Have you bought insurance yet? Have you brought your car in for its safety inspection? Did you pick the right school to ensure future success? So what exactly is Jesus commanding us when he says to “stop worrying?” In reality, our worries are an attempt to control outcomes — this much effort will get this reward. Jesus wants us to understand only God controls outcomes. If we live each day faithfully and with love in the end all will be well.
