In one sense it is a coincidence that on Sunday the lectionary proposes St. Luke’s version of the requirements for discipleship and on Monday, St. Matthew’s. But maybe it isn’t coincidence, but providence. God is giving us a little smack on the side of the head: pay attention. What strikes me about Jesus’ encounter with those wanting to be disciples is that they were all good people. But Jesus challenges them — being good is not enough. You need to be better. That challenge is extended to us. How easy it is to lapse into a comfort zone when we know that we’re basically okay. But Jesus wants us to be more kind, more compassionate, more forgiving, more generous.
