After the disaster of the destruction of the northern Kingdom of Israel and the near disaster of Sennacherib’s invasion of Judea, the Jewish people entered into a program of reform. Led by King Josiah and inspired by the “discovery” of a book of the law (Deuteronomy?) the nation sought to change its ways to conform more closely to the will of God. However, over time the reform waned. We can relate to that. You get a scare from the doctor and you make sure that you are eating only healthy things and doing your prescribed exercises. But over time the fear fades, the reformed life seems burdensome, and old ways reassert themselves. That was Judea’s story and it led inevitably to death and destruction.
