It never seems to be the prophet’s idea to begin their ministry. Isaiah protested, “I am a man of unclean lips.” Jeremiah complained, “I am too young. I know not how to speak.” In that tradition Amos described his vocation: “I was no prophet; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ Now hear the word of the LORD!” As we try to understand the call to prophecy we received at our baptism the important thing to remember is we are responding to what God has done in our hearts. God has planted some passion in us to address what ails us — follow where it leads.
