You alone have I favored, more than all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your crimes. This week we read from the eighth century, BC. prophet, Amos. He is concerned with the vast disparity that exists between the rich and the poor — a perennial theme for prophets throughout the centuries. As we will hear this week he is criticized. Why are you talking about economics? Shouldn’t you be talking about worship? Amos believed and preached that God was intimately involved in the way people lived in the world, not just their time in the temple. To be a people of God was to ensure that everyone had the same opportunity to share in the goods of God’s gift of creation. The rich hoarding more than their fair share meant there was not enough for the rest of the people to have a decent living. This was to the prophet Amos and is for us today a sin against God’s love for all.
