Raphael said to Tobiah before he reached his father: “I am certain that his eyes will be opened.” The presence of the angel Raphael (“God heals!”) guiding Tobiah was something new in the Jewish story. Angels ordinarily zip in, drop their message, and leave. That a angel would spend time accompanying Tobiah showed that the need for a sense of God’s presence among the Chosen People was acute in the time after the exile. In our lives there are times when we feel God is close to us. Other times, we can feel bereft and alone. The Biblical message is that God is always with it whether we feel it or not. Trust in the compassion of God and the angel of healing will come.
