The Campus Crusade for Christ, a non-denominational Protestant college program, loved to recruit Catholics. When I was at LSU they challenged me to a debate. I could answer them “chapter and verse” and so the argument went forward. But in the end it was an exercise in futility. No minds and hearts were changed. Contrast that experience with the challenge to Jesus about whether to pay taxes or not. Instead of engaging in a debate citing the Bible or wise rabbis, Jesus shifts the focus to God. “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” If we want to change minds and hearts it won’t be with brilliant refutations but rather by pointing beyond ourselves and toward God.
