In many of the protest marches you hear the slogan chanted: No Justice, No Peace. The problem comes in imagining that these are choices. The protesters want justice. The government wants peace. For a Christian there is not a choice between justice and peace for they are two sides of the same coin. So when we hear Paul’s exhortation to Timothy — proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching — we are reminded of our obligation to be bridge builders who connect justice and peace, who join protester and government official in a common effort. The “side” we are on demands justice — “that all men are created equal” — as the prerequisite to living in peace.
