JUNE62023

June 6, 2023 By Church Staff

The Book of Tobit, written about 200 years before the birth of Jesus, is not part of the Hebrew (and hence, Protestant) Bible. When the rabbis were putting together what is the Hebrew Bible sometime after 100AD they did not consider Tobit to be scripture since it (probably) was written in Babylon and not in the Holy Land. The early Christians used a Greek version of the Bible (the Septuagint) which contained the Book of Tobit and that is how it ended up in the Catholic Bible. The story itself is how God acts in the lives of very human people with their strengths and weakness. You can recognize with the spat between Tobit and his wife as the kind of thing husbands and wives do to each other. But through it all, by trusting in the plan God had for their family they found a way to live together.
