After the forty days of Lent and the fifty days of Easter we are back in “ordinary time.” The scripture readings during this season are a “continuous reading” — going through a book of the Bible chapter by chapter. For the Old Testament lesson we turn to the book of Kings and hear about the prophet Elijah. The gospel is taken from St. Matthew, beginning with the Sermon on the Mount. The beatitudes would have been proclaimed yesterday if not for the feast day. Today, Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth…. You are the light of the world.” We already are good enough, blessed enough, loved enough to be salt and light for the world. Let your light shine!
