The readings assigned for today provide an interesting contrast. The Prophet Elijah looks for God to operate in dramatic and concrete ways. “The God who answers with fire is God.” Jesus introduces in the Sermon on the Mount the God of small things. “Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass” — the jot and the tittle in a former translation. As people of faith we hold both approaches to God in tension. God is the Lord of History moving all of creation toward greater justice. God is concerned with the daily details of our lives — relationships, work, health, the environment. Our prayer must embrace all of history while noticing the dirty dishes.
