The Sermon on the Mount provides the outline of the Christian life. Jesus praises the law which has guided Jewish life: ” I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” He then describes what the fulfillment looks like in what are known as the six antithesis: you have heard this, but I say…. “Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.” Jesus points out that the good is the enemy of the better. We can become complacent that we are doing pretty good and lose the urge to grow in virtue. We are called to be saints but we remain content at being decent. Jesus challenges us to move more deeply into godliness.
