Billy Graham once preached a sermon which contained a line something like this: if God doesn’t intervene soon, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah. The sermon then went on to list the sexual sins present in the US. In contrast, when the prophet Isaiah thinks of the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah he notices sins of injustice. Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow. In my more than forty years of hearing confessions I’ve heard many sexual sins confessed but no one has ever confessed that they failed to hear the orphans plea. The Bible suggests that we need to make justice more central to our spiritual life.
