I try to imagine what kind of person would “beset the just one” or would try to kill Jesus. Certainly no one like me! But then I think of Dorothy Day. How much I admired her outreach to the hungry and the homeless that continues today in the various Catholic Worker houses. Yet I confess she made me uncomfortable when she would say things like, each bomb that you build you are stealing from the poor. Dom Helder Camara expressed a similar sentiment. “When I care for the poor they say I’m a saint. When I ask why they are poor they say I am a communist.” So there are people who rattle my complacency, to make me feel uncomfortable. I don’t want to think about the challenge they are in my life. Today’s prayer — look at that unease and understand what God is saying to me through it.
