“Believe the works I do,” said Jesus. That reminds me of the lesson on the how of evangelization which came from Pope Paul VI: “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” Actually, that applies not only to “modern man” (excuse the 1975 language) but to every human being. From the very beginning, the growth of the Church has been characterized by people commenting, “Look how those Christians love one another.” If we wish to grow the church let us love one another, and all the “others” who come into our orbit of care.
