Saint Joseph is held up as a model father, husband, worker, and man of faith. He is central to the story of salvation since it is from him that Jesus gets his identity as the “son of David,” and, hence, as the Messiah. The genealogies in both Matthew and Luke trace Jesus’ Davidic lineage through Joseph… which says that Jesus is a son of David by adoption, not by nature. This parallels our own identity as the adopted children of God. Jesus is really the Messiah even though it is by adoption. We are really the children of God even though it is by adoption. As the children of God we can rest in God’s arms even in a pandemic and all will be well.
