St. Thomas Aquinas once observed that anything we say about God is more wrong than it is right. God is so much more than our limited language and thoughts that every image we have of God is incomplete. That is why the Bible can refer to God both in paternal and maternal ways. Jesus calls God his Father. “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” In the prophet Isaiah God speaks as like a Mother. Can a mother forget her infant? Even should she forget, I will never forget you. Jesus used many images to help us understand what it meant to have God with us. I am the Good Shepherd, the Bread of Life, Living Water, the Light of the Word, the way and the truth. Doubtless in our own prayer we have an image of God that we can connect with and what a blessing that is. We should always be aware that there is so much more to God than our idea of God.
